Poetry Meets Biomedicine

What happens when poetry is enmeshed with scientific language? Is it possible to expose the language of scientific sub-cultures, and make that language accessible and inclusive rather than technical and exclusive? How is the engagement with the scientists visible, and how will it cast shadows across the poetry. What are the perceptual implications of presence and proximity within such collaborative creative practices?

These are some of the questions addressed by Poetry meets Biomedicine, a collaborative project between poets and scientists, curated by MA Creative Writing student Dorothy Lehane.

A launch event is being held on 10 October at 7pm at Keats House, 10 Keats Grove, Hampstead, London NW3.  Click here for further information and to book a place.

Lifework: Norman Parkinson's Century of Style

Regarded as the father of modern fashion photography, 2013 marks the centenary of Norman Parkinson’s birth. Many of the tropes that are now commonplace in print and online images – exotic locations, unexpected props and weird juxtapositions – were introduced in the extraordinary photographs he took before and after the Second World War. Beyond the glamour that for many defines his work, he was also an incisive and skilful portrait.

Schopenhauer's Child

Congratulations to Adebowale Oriku on the publication of his new book, Schopenhauer's Child, available on Amazon.

'The death his younger sister goads Nigerian-born Adebowale Oriku into asking searching questions. In this remarkable book, he tackles the issues that have exercised the minds of thinkers of every stripe over centuries. Can religion be a consolation? Maybe (for some). Maybe not. Psychology? Psychoanalysis? Literature and the arts? Humour? Sociology? Science? Or the 'mother' - Sophia - of all disciplines: Philosophy? A self-described 'liberal' and 'sceptic,' with the power of imagination and what the ancients would call 'nous,' Oriku writes about how the death of his sister affects him and how he deals with it - or tries to deal with it. And, generally, drawing on a fund of experience, both theoretical and practical, he expands on Life, Love and Loss.'
